SHINY connects emerging, diverse directors with the commercial production industry, via awards, events and development support. Our mission is to discover talented new directors, and in particular to support under-represented and diverse directors.
Every video entered into the Awards gets professional reviews from world-class industry VIPs in our jury network. This enables us to curate the #SHINYlist - the best rising, diverse director talent, as judged by that network. The list is then shared with over 200 brand, agency & production company partners, to fuel connections for directors and for companies interested in accessing fresh new talent.
SHINY runs regular events in London and Los Angeles to illuminate the processes of career development for film-makers with showcases, panel discussions, Q+As and networking.
We arrange sponsorships to allow hard-to-reach emerging talent to participate in SHINY for free.
SHINY is a chance for emerging directors and companies searching for fresh director talent, to interact face to face and promote the best new work. No appointment necessary. No nepotism at play.
SHINY was founded by Caroline Bottomley, who also started Radar
in 2006. Radar enabled worldwide access to music video commissioning, and was the first commissioning
platform of its kind that we know of on the internet.
Radar was acquired at the end of 2017.
Alex Hedges is a Non-Executive Director for SHINY.
Most recently Managing Director of acclaimed film edit house, The Assembly Rooms, Alex previously set up Inside Job, Saatchi’s in-house production arm. Prior to that she spent years working at some of London’s top production companies and agencies.
How it works
SHINY is a wonderful opportunity for every emerging director to get meaningful feedback, to hone skills and to meet VIP industry contacts in person - no appointment necessary, no nepotism at play.

Come to events
SHINY has far-reaching and extensive connections throughout the commercial production sector. We work with industry partners in many ways, including:
Scouting: SHINY regularly scouts diverse new talent with invitations to submit work. We have a network of over 100 activist groups who help us connect with new talent, many of whom are off-radar to the commercial production industry. For low/ no income talent, we work with sponsors & those activists to provide free access to SHINY.
Role models: We ensure every single one of our industry panels is at least ethnically & gender diverse. We work with ethnically & gender diverse people across our jury network partners. We apply diversity standards to our own team.
Awards process: Good practice in recruitment requires a diverse longlist. We apply the same criteria to our awards process (and as far as we know, are the ONLY awards programme to do this). All high scoring videos are longlisted within diversity categories, ensuring that when we create the final shortlist, it is representative across race, gender, income background and disability.
