That was a buzzing evening up on ENGINE's roof terrace!

Shiny's first women-focused event was a collaboration with ENGINE's Trailer Park, led by producer Laura James. As usual, we kicked off with the best selections from the Round 3 entries. We'd put out a call for more submissions from female directors - the usual ratio is 1 submission from women for every 2-3 submissions from men. The call-out more than reversed that ratio, meaning for the first time, our screening selection, represented many more women and many more women of colour.

Special thanks to ENGINE for sponsoring 10 submissions from diverse women, who may not have otherwise submitted work.

The panel & audience discussion was superb.

We had a fantastic panel, ranging across; a highly experienced and successful director - Sara Dunlop from Rattling Stick, a highly experienced and successful Creative Director - Jo Moore from ENGINE, a pioneer of 50:50 gender crewing - Mia Powell from Prettybird, emerging director & Creative Director - Vanessa Onalo (who heroicly stepped in for Naomi Grant last minute), and agent, editor and co-founder of Owned By Women - Jordan Jeansonne.

The audience led us into discussions about quotas, self-confidence, role models, networks & communities. One practical outcome is we agreed that Shiny will post a list of organisations that help production companies, producers and commissioners find more women & women of colour to work with. Look out for the 'Diversity' menu tab, coming soon!

Networking - again, loads of connections made on the night, with many requests from production companies & reps after the event for connection to directors and other attendees. Feedback and thank you letters (thank you!) were right up there.

Many thanks to all at ENGINE & Trailer Park: Adam, Ellie, Olenka, Ned, Bradley and very especially Laura; to the panelists Sara, Jo, Mia, Vanessa and Jordan, to all the emerging directors who entered their videos, and to everyone who came along and took part.
